All the gear for the EWZ Smart Meter is now installed

After having the Smart Meter itself installed a little more than a month ago, we received the remaining hardware for the smart meter study. Nothing is new in the basement, but we got all the stuff to allow us a real-time monitoring:

  • The Devolo receiver
  • An Archos 7 tablet running Android

The whole setup is pretty simple:

  • The communication is done over electrical wire between the Landis+Gyr E350 smart meter and the Devolo WiFi device.
  • This Devolo WiFi device, which I have to place on a wall socket, allows the communication via WiFi over to the tablet

  • The tablet pools data from the smart meter when the WiFi network is enabled and the tablet is running.

Googling a little the different components quickly points to the solution of magSPIN AG:

This is confirmed by the overview of their product called generation 1, which features the exact set of gear I just exposed:

The EWZ Smart Meter is installed

Our smart meter is finally in place and this without having noticed something in the last few days. It’s installed in the basement of our building and is the only brand-new Landis+Gyr equipement (E350) there.

The delivery of the smart meter reports will happen via WiFi according to EWZ. A quick check around the equipment showed that no new WiFi network was visible. Instead, a Devolo device is installed on the lower part of the smart meter. I therefore guess that the data will first transit via the electric wire network before being broadcasted via WiFi.

Let’s wait and see in the upcoming weeks if this scenario gets confirmed!

News from the EWZ Smart Metering study

As it was annonced when we enrolled for the smart metering study, the installation of the smart meters themselves was planned for the end of the year.

This is now confirmed by a letter from EWZ telling us that an electricity interruption will happen once between October 28th and November 7th to allow the installation of the new electricity meter.

At the time of writing this article, I have no further details about the upcoming steps but be sure you’ll be kept posted and I’ll give you further details about the installation once it’s ready Sourire
